CaringMatters is proud to present Joan and Ken Miller with the 2026 Jerry Gimmel Loyalty Award in recognition of their extraordinary loyalty, service, generosity, and unwavering commitment to our mission. Through decades of volunteerism, advocacy, professional expertise, and philanthropy, they have helped strengthen CaringMatters and improve the lives of countless individuals and families facing serious illness, caregiving, loss, and grief.

Joan's connection to CaringMatters began more than two decades ago and is deeply rooted in her own life experience. A two-time cancer survivor, Joan underwent lengthy inpatient treatment for leukemia with three young children at home. During that difficult time, she became acutely aware of the lack of support available to families navigating serious illness, grief, and uncertainty. While facing her own mortality, she made a promise that if she survived, she would dedicate herself to helping others find the support, hope, and healing they need during life's most difficult moments.

True to that promise, Joan has devoted her life to serving children and families experiencing grief and loss. An educator, author, and mental health professional, she has authored books, including Healing Grief: A Story of Survivorship. Since joining CaringMatters in 2002, Joan has served in numerous volunteer roles in programs including Good Grief Clubs, Camp Caring and Camp Erin, Family Nights, and been a supporter of countless other initiatives and special events. Her innovative spirit, warmth, wisdom, and ability to connect with children and families have made a profound and lasting impact on our community.

“Both Ken and I believe it is a sacred privilege to support people who are facing life’s most difficult physical and emotional challenges,” said Joan. “CaringMatters is an important part of my identity,” she continued. “It is in my bones and gives my life precious meaning.”

Ken has complemented Joan's service with his own extraordinary dedication. A highly respected oncologist, he has generously shared his expertise through CaringMatters community education programs and presentations, helping individuals and families better understand and navigate cancer-related challenges. Beyond the podium, Ken has become a trusted resource and source of comfort for staff, volunteers, clients, and friends of CaringMatters facing cancer diagnoses. His willingness to offer guidance, answer questions, and support others during difficult times reflects both his professional excellence and his compassionate heart.

On a personal level, Ken has also been devoted cheerleader for Joan during her 24 years as a CaringMatters volunteer, supporting her involvement and dedication to the mission and to this community with pride and enthusiasm.

Together, Joan and Ken have become cherished members of the CaringMatters family. Their support extends far beyond volunteer service and professional expertise. They are generous supporters of our fundraising efforts and community events, always stepping forward to help advance our mission.

“Joan and Ken exemplify the very spirit of the Jerry Gimmel Loyalty Award,” said Allison Stearns, CEO of CaringMatters. “Their dedication to CaringMatters is woven into every aspect of their lives. Through volunteer service, professional expertise, philanthropy, and genuine friendship, they have touched countless lives and helped ensure that no one in our community faces serious illness, caregiving, loss, or grief alone.”

We are honored to recognize Joan and Ken Miller’s remarkable contributions with the 2026 Jerry Gimmel Loyalty Award.
