​Bernard Buteau completed twenty-five years of service in the U. S. Navy as an Engineering Duty Officer at various Navy facilities.  After retiring from the Navy in 1974, Bernie joined NUS Corporation, an engineering and environmental consulting firm in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he served as the Vice President and General Manager of its Field Operations and Training Division until retirement in 1987.  Subsequently, he performed general management consulting for several years with small businesses engaged in residential and commercial construction.  Bernie holds an undergraduate degree from the U. S. Naval Academy and a graduate degree in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  He commenced community service with Hospice Caring, Inc. in 1991, was elected President of the Board of Directors in 1992 and served until 1998, when he transitioned to the Board of Trustees.
