Maria J. Alvarez
Office Manager/Administrative Volunteer Coordinator
María joined CaringMatters in 2019 in the role of Office Manager/Administrative Volunteer Coordinator. She has extensive experience with project management and working within the nonprofit community with organizations such as Interfaith Works and Catholic Relief Services. Her bilingual and bi-cultural experience helps to extend CaringMatters’ reach into Montgomery County’s diverse communities.
María became inspired by the nonprofit and social service sector in the Washington, D.C. area when she arrived in the United States from Guatemala as a teenager. Her family’s experience at the Spanish Catholic Center in D.C. was influential in shaping María’s future, both personally and professionally. The positive impact of this community led her to study at Catholic University and pursue a profession in social services.
María’s experience as a full-time family caregiver for an ill family member informs her work here at CaringMatters as she works with our clients facing some of life’s most difficult challenges. Her past volunteer experience includes three terms serving as the PTSA President of Stephen Knolls School in Kensington, Maryland. She also served for five years as a Community Friend for Families Together, a national organization fostering family accompaniment for parents navigating the school and health systems on behalf of their special needs children.
